What to play before, during and after "I do"

Your wedding ceremony is more than just vows, it's a soundtrack to one of the most meaningful chapters of your life. From the first guest arrival to your walk back down the isle as newlyweds, every moment deserves music that sets the tone, stirs the emotions and reflects your unique love story.

Let's break down the key musical moments and explore song ideas that elevate each one.

Before the Ceremony: Setting the mood

As guests arrive and take their seats, the atmosphere should feel warm, welcoming and full of anticipation. This is the chance to build emotional momentum.

Vibe: Romantic, scenic or subtly upbeat

Ideas:

  • A Thousand Years  - Christina Perri (timeless and tender)
  • Canon in D - Pachelbel (traditional favorite)
  • Marry Me - Train (modern and heartfelt)
  • Acoustical covers of popular songs (think Ed Sheeran, Adel or Taylor Swift)
  • String or piano covers of popular songs (Vitamin String Quartet, Midnight String Quartet, The Piano Guys)

Pro tip: Instrumentals work beautifully here. They allow guests to chat softly without competing with lyrics..

During the ceremony: the big moments

There is typically three key musical cues during the ceremony

1. Processional (wedding party entrance)

This is the entrance for the bridesmaids and often the groomsmen as well.  You can choose one song for both, but typically two different songs are chosen.

For the groomsmen, a fun slightly upbeat song is often chosen, however that is not a requirement

  • Boys Round Here - Blake Shelton (fun and entertaining)
  • Thunderstruck - AC/DC (for the rock lovers)
  • Better Together - Jack Johnson

The bridesmaids set the stage for the grand entrance!  Choose something graceful or subtly dramatic.

  • Turning Page - Sleeping at Last
  • Thank God I Do - Lauren Daigle
  • Can't Help Falling in Love - Elvis Presley

2. Brides Entrance

This is the moment. You can go classic, cinematic or deeply personal

  • Here Come's the Bride (traditional classic)
  • All of Me - John Legend  (instrumental or vocal)
  • On My Way To You - Cody Johnson

Signing, Interlude, Unity Ceremony

  • Bless This Broken Road - Rascal Flatts
  • A Thousand Years - Christina Perri
  • Make You Feel My Love - Adele
During signing, interlude or if you are doing a unity ceremony (unity candle, tying a knot, blending sand) a soft, instrumental or meaningful song for these parts of your ceremony adds depth

After The Ceremony: The Recessional

You're married!  Cue the celebration!!! This is your first walk as a married couple, so let the music reflect joy, triumph and love.

Vibe: Upbeat, joyful and celebratory

Ideas:

  • Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder
  • Best Day of My Life - American Authors
  • You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oats
  • Paper Rings - Taylor Swift

Bonus: Follow with a short playlist as your guests exit to keep the energy high and smiles flowing.
