Socials
The second question a newly engaged couple is most likely asked is "when's the social?"
A manitoba tradition, the social was brought to us by Ukrainian immigrants many, many years ago. Traditionally, the event as held to help the young couple start their journey together. The community would have a social gathering, take up collections and give the proceeds to the couple.
Today, the social has new meaning. The event is held as a fund raiser to raise money to help cover the usually high expenses of the wedding. It also serves as a celebration in honor of their engagement. Many of the guests who attend the social will be co-workers, associates and other people who may not be able (or invited... let's face it, with the price of a wedding, one can't have a HUGE guest list) to the wedding.
Of course, not all socials are for weddings. Many are fundraisers for variouse charaties or to raise money for sports teams.
When deciding on whether or not to have a social, there are a few things you must consider. First, if this is to be a wedding social, how many people do you expect to attend? If you only want a few close family and friends, then you should consider an engagement party. This will be easier and less expensive to put on.
